Confession 7 – Atheism

In Confessions on April 8, 2010 at 4:54 AM

I am an atheist. I do not believe in god whatsoever. I am not here to justify the in-existence of god. I am here to say that I am practicing Islamic prayers just for the sake of it. My mother wants me to pray and she really really feels great when she knows I am, I go to Friday prayers and all that just for the sake of my mom. She feels very comfy when I do all that. The thing is, its killing me. I feel like I am hypocrite, but I just cant see mom that upset, I have some atheist friends too, but the support is very limited, they’re not going through what I am. Mom likes it that way, and I like mom very much, so I am doing what pleases her, simple algebraic expression.

  1. I’m no expert at religion but after 40 years I’ve softened my atheism. Maybe you can get something from going through the rituals that is not necessarily expected, like calm meditation, or a laugh to yourself? At some point you will tell your Mum you’re different from her and the sooner you do that the better but don’t expect to live in her home afterwards!!! Good luck.

  2. It is so funny, you don’t any religion, you don’t have an honest relationship with your Mom, it sounds like you are in a great deal of turmoil. Go back ten steps and start from the beginning and you will find yourself!

  3. Dude your going to hell. AHAHAHA I can’t wait to see you suffer.

    • oh see him suffer? your going to hell with him, to see him suffer.

I advise you to shut up, and instead of discouraging people, and straight away sending them to hell, you would be best instead to tell them whats their problem, or tell them to go to seek help to a psychiatrist. but instead a piece of shit like you. Has to act manly, i think your a 14 year old, who doesnt know anything about life.

    • see u suffer???? will you be in hell? hmmmm good choice of words there Judas..

  4. You are not a hypocrite because you are being true to the love of your mother. Any religious person should be able to see that you would do anything for her and thats all that matters. It will be hard living like this, but you can find an outlet. Think of it this way, even religious people had to hide their faith for long periods of time to escape persecution, its just one of life’s little ironies.

You are making your mother happy, focus on the joy that it brings you. If you feel that there is no support from your athiest friends then at least know that there is one spiritual stranger on the internet that supports you and hopes the best for you not in the hopes of swaying you to “believe” either. In my eyes you already believe in the most important thing in the world… Love.

Take care of yourself and your mother, you will be happy soon ๐Ÿ˜€

    • I completely agree with everything you just said. I am not an atheist, I’m spiritual, I believe in a higher being. What that higher being is exactly, I don’t know, it could be God, it could be something else…who knows.

But I completeeeeeeeely second your entire comment.

  5. You ARE a hypocrite, the worst kind. No matter how people try to soften it up for you so you’d feel all warm inside, you ARE a hypocrite. If I knew you, I’d say it to your face every time I see you. The worst thing in life is not calling things what they really are. In your case, there is no other word in the dictionary that best describes you other than hypocrite.

You feel so special that you have to be different from the rest of humanity? don’t you? The majority of humans since the dawn of time and wrong and you are right with your atheist friends?

It is really sad that you are afraid from your mother but not from God. I really hope you come to your senses one day.

  6. What you’re doing is good. I believe that our beliefs regarding the “supernatural” should not at all interfere with our relationships with family and friends.

I think you’re quite young and a recent convert to atheism, that’s why practicing islamic behaviour seems to be bothering you. But if it makes you mother happy, it should be worth it. I think you will find it much more easier to conform as the years go on.

  7. I don’t get what ur afraid of…loosing ur mom, ur hurting her now more by lying..shes gonna find out sooner or later…the sooner u admit it, the better and when ur parents get older its gonna be hard to admit it..and ur hanging out with the wrong crowd and ur obviously YOUNG and naive

  8. Brother… please..for the love of god , save yourself we are not in the USA or something..dont become an athiest i can understand if you were any other religion but it is proven that “ISLAM” is the “ONLY” yes.. “Only”…Religion that has not been edited and still to this DAY. NO ERRORS have been found in the religion and ALL the predictions that were said have become and shall become…but honestly i hope Allah guides you to the right path…and i really hope you go “soul searching” once more… i really hope to see you in Jennah Goolo ameen… its a shame your letting islam go…when it has been given to you

    • Religion is an outlet created by man to program a purpose for themselves to live; goals, endgame etc…. You can’t blame people for thinking for themselves or outside the box and not abide by a book written by savages using ancient “scientific” ideas.

Anyway, this country is gone to shit. Most Kuwaitis act like, no ARE Islamic hypocrites anyway… Drinking, fucking around with the opposite gender and smoking up etc…

Don’t tell me these temptations are trials and all that mumbo jumbo to get into heaven. It’s all our instincts that we are born with, eat, fuck sleep. That is life and nothing more unless you want it to be.

Live your life and be happy. That’s what keeps me rolling.

      • agreed. I feel like people should be freeeee to do whatever they want, to express themselves in what ever way they want.

Why should they have to conform to one religion? Why can’t they just live life, be happy and go with the flow.

And also, who’s to say that nobody’s edited the islamic religion? Every religion believes that they’re the “ONLY” one. wtf. No. You choose to believe what you want to believe, why the fuck are you forcing it down my throat? You know?

So eff that, man. People need to stop worrying about going to hell, or going to heaven. I’m pretty sure God wants everyone to be happy, he’s a lover not a hater. So as along as a person is a good person, and has good morals, does good things in life, then they’re ok.

But then again, that’s what “I” believe in! So everyone..feel free to express yourself however way you want. Live your life the way YOU want it. But don’t hate on someone else for choosing a different path. That path may be right in their eyes, so let them be.

Man, people seriously have too much negativity built up inside them, they need to just break freeeeeeeeee and relax.

      • I Just hate it when ppl say things they read somewhere . Did u even read about religion ? When u do and still ur not convinced then u get to talk . An regarding atheism everything here in Kuwait Is ” Haba” and right now it’s atheism so don’t worry ull get over it . And it’s really nice that u love ur mom that much

  9. i think youur a hypocrit , but a diet one.
don’t worry i wouldn’t call an athiest , and btw , who the hell are your friends? you mum is far better than meetin’ them ?!
finally , since when the “the athiest bandwagon ” is cool ? Boy you’ve a life ahead of you , don’t play you know everything, even i don’t know everything at all!

  10. wow, whoever wrote this blog must be glad they’re anonymous. Display some compassion and gve the poor man a break.

  11. to all who are up this guys ass for being an atheist, kindly back off, it’s a matter of personal choice and you shouldn’t be interfering. just like no one interferes in your personal matters.
we all have our beliefs, im muslim, and i have many atheist friends, some who did end up becoming christians. all of you saying that this guy is going to hell, wow, look at yourselves playing God, tell me where im going to go you guys, heaven or hell? :D:D OMG OMG i didnt know id come across mere mortals living on this planet who could decide where im going after i die! i thought that was Allah’s decision.

so yeah, back off, and if you do want to comment, dont make it sound like its coming from a heartless prick.

as for the blogger, hey man, you sound like a good kid, keep it your own little secret, you’re not a hypocrite, you just love your mom too much to hurt her with what you know might hurt her.
sometimes burying secrets deep inside yourself is the best solution.

  12. @SB I didn’t say that he will go to hell, it just seemed funny that everyone was saying it. Hence, the “lol”. It was like 2 in the mornig when I wrote that comment. I know that, it is Allah’s decision. But what does he know, disbelieving God and all. Apparently he’s just a kid, and I think it would be best to alter his pessimistic thinking now, when he is young, so it would be easier for him to change. Burying secrets will eat him alive. What if he dies young, and because he disbelieved in God, he goes to hell. As Meshl said, let him “save himself” now before it’s too late. I’m not a sheikh or anything, but almost anyone can tell right from wrong, it’s common sense, you probably would know that. If you’re going to encourage him to keep doing what he’s doing and keep it to himself, why bother. I bet you, he of all people, knows that what he is doing is wrong. Otherwise, he would have not kept it a secret and could have taken priden in it. That’s why the people that are confessing confess, they’re most likely afraid of the outcome because they know of their wrong-doings.

@Meshl Right on, great advice. Nice choice of words.

@Atheist Think twice, before it’s too late. And then there’s a very important aspect, get new friends. Start from scratch. Go ‘soul-searching’.

“Today is the first day of the rest of your life.”

Trust me, it’s for the better.

  13. I believe in God but not in Islam or any of the man-made religions. and I think its very noble of you to exercise 5 prayers a day, 7 times a week, multiplied by a billion just to please your mother. Don’t worry about the rest, there is no “hell.”

    cheers

  14. We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing all-powerful God, who creates faulty Humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes. โ€“ Gene Roddenberry
To surrender to ignorance and call it God has always been premature, and it remains premature today. – Isaac Asimov

  15. The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality. โ€“ George Bernard Shaw
Faith means not wanting to know what is true. โ€“ Friedrich Nietzsche

  16. What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof. โ€“ Christopher Hitchens

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. โ€“ Stephen Roberts

  17. My feeling is this, you only have 1 life, don’t waste it on other men’s ideas of what life is about. Know that you are not alone and other people share your feeling of hypocrisy.

If I were you, I would spend the time thinking about school work, your hobbies, your life and meditating on things that truly matter to you. Use that time to reflect on history, family or even think about the prophets if you want. The stories and ideas of Islam (and every other religion) may be complete bullshit from an accuracy standpoint, but they can hold deep messages and insight. Just lie to your mother and tell her you pray if that’s what it takes to make her happy. What she doesn’t know, will not hurt her.

Ultimately, this is your decision and since this is anonymous, you have the liberty of picking and choosing the advice given here. Good luck and I hope you find true peace, soon.

  18. My advice:

Don’t tell her. You’ll break her heart. She wont understand you. You wont understand her. You’ll just break her heart.

  19. U broached one of the most sensitive issue. Well, my outlook wud be religion is a very personal thing and it’s ur choice. Not believing in God does not make u strong and putting up an act to please ur loved ones doesn’t make u weak. Looks like u still live with them, so u still fall under their regime :). Once u grow older u can follow ur own beliefs. Don’t be intimidated by going to hell. It’s not true. Heven n hell exists on earth. Period. It’s the oldest political game played ever, scaring u to do something. Lastly I wud add, be n atheist, but just don’t disrespect anyone or anyone’s beleives. Good luck.

  20. I think it’s admirable that you are practicing religion for the sake of your mother, because it shows you have a good heart. But, I advise you to also be true to yourself, and to your own beliefs. A lack of religion does not make one a nihilistic sociopath, contrary to popular opinion. I am an atheist, but I feel very involved spiritually with other people, and with this universe. I have respect for others, feelings of awe at the universe, etc. But, as your mother believes there is a god, you believe there is not. Neither one of you knows the truth. But your beliefs, and how you use them to navigate in this world, are important. Pascal says that to be religious is making the best bet. If god exists, you win, if he doesn’t, you stand to lose nothing. But, I think that if god exists, and you have behaved humanely and with love and kindness and honesty, it shouldn’t matter that you believed or not.
I highly recommend reading the book The Little Book of Atheist Spirituality by Andre Comte-Sponville. It put words to all that I felt in my heart regarding religion and spirituality. Perhaps it will give you the courage to explain yourself to your mother. If it is making you this miserable, I would deal with it sooner rather than later. Best of luck.

  21. Hey, I think that what you’re doing is good.. You’re actually being better than most of the religious people who never respect other people’s feelings or believes.. All of the great and intellectual people are atheists simply because religion is a big lie. What makes us human are the values that we put for ourselves and the empathy towards other people and not some centuries old book of lies..
    Best of luck ๐Ÿ˜‰

  22. Hi.

Sometimes people reconsider their thoughts and end up choosing wrong decisions due to their lack of knowledge.

I am Muslim, and a loyal one too and I want you to look at a few things with me:

1- Most people are sane. They want the best and they are willing to work in the short term for long term benefits.

2- People who witnessed the miracles of prophets understood that there is a powerful deity behind those miracles and thus work by the prophet’s preachings. They may have also witnessed miracles themselves in various forms even after a prophet’s death (I did personally). This explains the enormous amount of believers in the world.

3- Participating in religion can be tiresome: fasting, pilgrimage, daily prayer is a burden and people will not do it if they think there is no benefit from it.

Now, everyone has the right to believe in whatever they want but I want you to witness a miracle right there in your house. It is the Holy Qur’an. According to Muslims, the Holy Qur’an is Mohammed’s (PBUHAHF) long lasting miracle that anyone can examine. Please read on the internet and wherever you can (books, ask other people, etc) about what miracles are in the book.

    For instance:

The Holy Qur’an tells us of future events that were confirmed, it gives us scientific knowledge that has only been found in the past century from 1400 years back. You seem like a reasonable person. The Holy Qur’an told you about blackholes, the reflecting atmosphere, the stages of embryotic development extremely precisely and accurate over 1400 years ago. At that times there were any means of acquiring such knowledge. Everyday, we, as the human race, understand more and more of this holy book.

Let me supply you with a few internet links to guide you further:

  24. Hello,

I do not understand what has led you to this atheist point of view but I assume that it might be the influence of some of your friends. I am telling you this as advice to a person that I believe is lost. I have lived in Kuwait for most of my life but now I study in the UK. There are many people here that are atheist and have tried to make me see their point of view but trust me I have told them all I know about Islam and gave them a few leaflets and they have grown silent. And I think that they are now doubting their atheist views. I think it is very hard for a person to believe in something that they do not fully understand which is why it is your duty to find out more about the religion which your mother (whom you love so much) follows. There must be a reason that she and many others follow Islam so wholeheartedly. So take time to find it out. Read the quran more and try to understand what it preaches and if you are unsure of what something means or you doubt something, then ask your mom, or better yet a sheikh.

Please don’t let yourself be influenced by others. We already have enough people in the world condemning us for being Muslim and it would be horrible for a person who was born a muslim to do the same.

    May allah be with you and here is a dua’a to help in times of difficulty : ู„ู„ู‘ูŽู‡ูู…
